This week, the California State Senate unanimously passed Bill 188, known as the Crown Act, which bans racial discrimination based on hairstyles. While it’s only the first legislative hurdle for the measure, the proposal is expected to be eventually approved as law. If you’re looking for a way to celebrate this overdue step toward embracing and celebrating natural hair, consider stopping by the Afrolicious Hair Expo in Oakland on Sunday, April 28.

Afrolicious is a hair convention that celebrates, educates, and demonstrates natural hair care, techniques and natural hairstyles. The Afrolicious six-city tour kicks off at the Esports Arena (255 2nd Street in Oakland) at 11 am, and will include an Afrocentric fashion show, professional hair panels, a Little Miss Afrolicious Pageant (for girls ages 5 to 12), and natural hair and beauty product vendors. There will also be live demos and instructions on how to transition, style, and care for natural hair using different hair products and techniques.

Tickets, available through Eventbrite, are $20 each (plus fees), or $15 each if you purchase at least two.
