So Long, Cow Hollow Nike. It Was Good While It Lasted

Perhaps there is a Union Street athletic wear saturation point after all.

The Nike store on Union at Webster is closing on August 24, leaving local fitness fanatics with only five nearby spots to shop for gym clothes: Sweaty Betty, Lorna Jane, Titika, Lululemon, and Lucy.

Nike opened the outpost at 2071 Union Street in the spring of 2014, around the same time Equinox landed on Union Street. The store has always targeted the women's athletic apparel market. When it opened, there was a small men's section in a back corner, but the brand later reimagined the space as a women's only shop.

Despite the number of gyms and leggings-clad women in the area, it seems that the location wasn't meeting Nike's performance expectations. A staffer told me that Nike is looking to consolidate its real estate footprint and turn the Union Square flagship into a one-stop-shop for both men and women.

Although there are a few items on sale, don't expect this to be a going out of business blowout. (Nike can transfer the leftover inventory to the Union Square store at 278 Post Street.) But if you want to say your goodbyes to the only performance apparel shop on Union that also sold shoes, now's the time to (just) do it.
